Lonely Planet review for Nuba

Tucked under the landmark Dominion Building, this hopping subterranean Lebanese restaurant attracts budget noshers and cool hipsters in equal measure. If you’re not sure what to go for, have the good-value falafel plate ($9), heaped with hummus, taboulleh, salad, pita and brown rice. It’ll make you realize what wholesome, made-from-scratch food is supposed to taste like. More substantial fare – grilled lamb, Cornish hen etc – has been added to the menu since the eatery moved from its hole-in-the-wall site across the street, and there’s also regular live music. Excellent service.

    More than just falafels

    melissacj recommends this,

Nuba is a delight as one of the few good-quality, inexpensive eateries in the Yaletown area (one of Nuba's two locations). This spare but stylish take-out restaurant serves up interesting and delicious Lebanese fare. Vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes are all available and the menu clearly distinguishes between them.

Most dishes are served either wrapped in pitas, or as platters with sides of tabbouleh, salad, hummus and rice or potatoes. If you can pronounce it, order the mjadra (organic lentils with avocado and crispy onion -$6.50 pita, $9.25 plate), which elevated my appreciation of Lebanese food beyond mediocre falafel and donairs. On one visit, neighbouring diners were digging into "The Feast" (a vegetarian sampler platter for two -$24), and I could barely keep my hands to myself. Many of the veggies used are organic and (for meat-eaters) the lamb is grain-fed.

This is high-quality, rich and wholesome take-out (and eat-in!) that won't break the bank. Hastings Street location is open Mon-Fri 11:30-7, Yaletown Mon-Fri 11:30-9 and Sat noon-9.
