  1. A

    La Taqueria

Arrive off-peak to avoid the crush at this delightful hole-in-the-wall and you’ll be able to grab a perch at the turquoise-colored counter. Listening to the grassroots Mexican soundtrack and kitchen staff chatting in Spanish is the perfect accompaniment to a few superbly prepared soft tacos: go for the four-part combo and choose from fillings like grilled fish, pork cheeks and house-marinated beef, with top-notch, locally sourced ingredients. Vegetarians have some tasty choices (the veggie combo is cheaper than the meat combo) and great-value quesadillas are also available. Save room for a glass of cinnamony horchata (a milkshake-style traditional beverage).

  2. B

The Mouse & the Bean Café

Tucked under the rust-colored heritage Dominion Building is this great-value family-run Mexican joint. Everything – including the salsa and refried beans – is lovingly made in-house and the prices are eye-openingly low, which probably explains why the floor is still unfinished concrete. There are lots of vegetarian options – ask the server at the counter for tips on what to try. The feast-like Plato Mixteco is ideal if you want to share.
