  2. Pebble / Keyhole Hot Spring

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 29 August 2009

I arrive in Pemberton a day before my brother Mike, so there is plenty of time to do some odd jobs; I clean and organize the Jeep, sew up holes in my tent, do a couple of workouts and read in the sun. Mike rides into town in the early afternoon and we both can’t [...]

  3. Aiyansh Hot Springs

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 26 August 2009

I turn off the Stewart-Cassiar onto “The Cutoff”; 55 km of nasty, rocky gravel that takes me into the town of New Aiyansh and leads on to Aiyansh Hot Springs. I cross into Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park, an area of relatively recent volcanic activity. I pass by many “lava beds”, massive regions of [...]

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 23 August 2009

Driving up and down the Alaska Highway in the Liard area is giving me headache inducing déjà vu, so I’m happy to turn off familiar roads onto the Stewart-Cassiar highway. I drive for less than an hour and decide I like this road. I like it a lot. It’s narrow, windy, seems to have no line [...]

Today’s update is written in the style of my favorite guide book (no points for guessing which one…) Portage Brûlé Hot Spring up to 48 ˚C (118 ˚F) These seldom visited springs are situated on the north shore of the Liard River about 3 kms (2 mi.) downstream from the mouth of the Coal River. Round-trip hiking time [...]

  6. Ode To A Canadian Appalachian Spring

Blog: Curves and Levels - 20 August 2009

Like me, now that summer is peaking, many others will be escaping the city swelter and seeking out campsites and cottages throughout this captivating region. Even an afternoon's drive through the greenery is change of scenery enough, if that's all the time one has.

  7. Wildlife Wednesday; The Wolves of Haliburton Forest

    Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 19 August 2009

About 3 hours north of Toronto way up in Central Ontario is one of our favorite places in the Province. Haliburton forest is a nature lovers dream. A place for hiking, mountain biking and canoeing in the summer and cross country skiing and dog sledding in the winter. But it is the Haliburton Forest Wild Life and Reserve that has kept us coming back.

Blog: Have Baby Will Travel - 19 August 2009

With every trip we take with our daughter, I get less and less concerned about how she’ll handle the journey, and how to keep her occupied en route.  This was trip number 6 for her, and at 3.5-years-old, she’s a great little traveler.  Because I was a big chicken (and thankfully I was because that [...]

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 17 August 2009

Bush whacking through head high ferns inter-laced with deliciously ripe raspberries I had to wonder what the local four-legged furry residents thought of my being here. I hadn’t yet come to terms with why I was there. Why do I enjoy getting myself as far away from civilization as possible all in the pursuit of hot [...]

  10. Whitewater canoeing Pt. 2

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 12 August 2009

The next morning the wind was down and we made our way down the shoreline of the West Arm of the lake. We checked and double-checked and made a group decision to cross, knowing full well we were all dead if we capsized. As Brett very calmly stated “If a grizzly bear falls out of the [...]

Brett and I had been throwing around a bunch of different ideas for the major adventure we should undertake together. Ever on the lookout for remote hot springs, I made a detour to the mysterious mining town of Atlin at the end of a good gravel road just over the border in British Columbia. Twenty odd kilometers south of town are three warm springs, the first of which was the focus of my attention. A pool [...]

  19. Oh, Canada

    Blog: No Borders - 27 July 2009

Ontario, Canada - This weekend we drove from Detroit to Toronto for a wedding. It's the first time I have been to Toronto in about 15 years, and the first time I have driven over the border in almost a decade. We all know that times have changed since 9/11. But driving to Canada was a bit of a shock for someone who used to drive to Windsor to go drinking on a Saturday night. Nowadays, passports are definitely required and it takes at least a half-hour just to cross the border.

Evidence of the Klondike Gold Rush that swept through Alaska and the Yukon has been visible in every direction across the north. No image captures the hardships the stampeders endured better than that of hundreds of weary people in a seemingly endless line carrying back-breaking loads over Chilkoot Pass. In the winter of 1897/8 100,000 hopeful [...]
