Toronto Restaurants

  1. Global Cheese

OK, so it's not technically a place where you can sit down and eat, but WOW, have you ever seen such an amazing cheese shop? Fevered crowds elbow for a spot near the counter where staff, hidden behind teetering stacks of cheese, distribute slivers of Greek feta, Canadian gouda, Argentine parmesan, Spanish manchego and Swiss ementhal. Taste a few, order a wedge then hit the streets.

  2. Le Gourmand

A nirvana for foodies, Le Gourmand is a classy grocery store stocking Napa Valley mustards, rare Mexican chocolates and jars of Italian eggplant pesto. Peruse the deli case and pastry shelves, sip a foamy cappuccino or cool off with a homemade gelato. As for breakfast, can we tempt you with a Portobello mushroom and goats' cheese omelette (around C$9 )?

  3. Phil's Original BBQ

'Real smoke. Real slow. Real good.' American barbecue-belt immigrants, these folks are passionate about 'cue. Order up a mess of heartbreakingly tender beef brisket and dry-rub smoked meats and smother the lot in homemade sauces. On the down side, service can be a little 'northern' (brrrr…).

  4. Sassafraz

With a red carpet parade of celebs trotting in and out on a regular basis (Jude Law, Matthew McConaughey, Joan Collins and the like), Sassafraz feels more like LA than T.O. Jazz combos serenade weekend brunches, while sassy receptionists distribute the clientele between the sun-drenched sidewalk tables and indoor garden courtyard. The food? Predictably good.

  5. Senator Restaurant

One for architecture buffs, this '30s art deco luncheonette features curved glass windows, a fluted aluminum counter-face, archaic coffee urns and original booths and lighting - what a time warp! The menu has shifted marginally upmarket, but the service is still very 'diner.'

  6. Supermodel Pizza

The motto stutters, 'Our crust is as thin as supermodel' - no prizes for grammar, and we didn't see any bulimic waifs chomping down slices, but we're willing to take the bait for one of their Florentine special pizzas (pesto, spinach, roast red peppers and feta cheese).

  7. Swan

Fickle Queen Westers remain smitten with Swan, a swanky, nostalgic diner just off the beaten path by Trinity Bellwoods Park. You'll find upscale comfort food like nothing anyone's family ever cooked; from oyster omelettes to racks of beer-marinated ribs, dishes satisfy both the stomach and the soul.
