Among the cookie-cutter chain hotels along Century Blvd near LAX, the Sheraton Gateway stands out for its stunning combo of designer-savvy decor and intimate, boutique-style service, despite a hulking shell. It's anything but ordinary.

Outside, this 15-storey, 800-plus-room behemoth looks like what you'd expect from an airport hotel, but inside it's another matter. This value-priced Sheraton was redesigned by the ubiquitous Kor Hotel Group (who envisioned the Maison 140 and Avalon in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica's Viceroy and the Chamberlain West Hollywood). There's eye candy everywhere, from the patterned red-leather armchairs to zebra-striped sofas. Almost like a self-contained resort, the hotel offers all the amenities (eg outdoor heated swimming pool, 24-hour fitness center and triple-paned windows) to rejuvenate you after an exhausting flight. Rooms feature ebony-colored furniture and bed coverings with pinstripes like those on a fine suit. Above-average eateries include a California casual brasserie, a steak house and sushi bar, plus a Starbucks outlet. Wi-fi is free in the lobby, or US$11 per day in rooms.
