This cliff-top castle with swirling turrets and a copper roof overlooks the St Lawrence and backs onto the Laurentian Mountains. It has been one of the most magnificent hotels in Canada since its construction in 1930, and one of the first to attract glamorous Hollywood stars.
With an outdoor skating rink, indoor-outdoor heated swimming pool and ice fishing opportunities, the Manoir Richelieu is best for winter getaways. You can even arrange for a snowmobile or a horse-drawn carriage to meet you in front of the hotel. With the attached Charlevoix casino and on-site health spa, those seeking non-physically challenging pursuits will have plenty to keep them busy indoors. Not all rooms have dramatic views of the river below, but the accessible-to-all outdoor terrasse overlooks the water and has fire pits to warm your toes.
