Lonely Planet review for Le Grain de Riz
A foodie favorite, this Western-Asian fusion restaurant lies just off Rue St-Joseph. Creative twists on Vietnamese and Chinese dishes appear in menu items like chicken with Earl Grey cream sauce served on couscous, or coconut shrimp with mango salsa. Helpful staff give tips on navigating the complex menu flavors. The attached store sells imported rice and tea.

Cold Food and Management Does Not Care
travelfoodieusa does not recommend this,
We ate at Grain de Riz on December 31, 2011. We decided to try the 3-course tasting menu with wine pairing. Since it was a special menu for New Years Eve we anticipated having an exceptionally good meal. After ordering, four very disappointing things occurred, which in turn ruined what should have been an amazingly romantic evening.
1. The soup course was served with cold broth. Instead of serving us a fresh dish we were served the same dish microwaved. The broth cooks the meat. The meat in the soup was tuff.
2. The duck course was served cold. Everything on the plate was cold: the duck, rice and asparagus. Once again this dish had to be sent back.
3. The dessert was just bad. The white chocolate was inedible. The server told us that 3 out of 6 employees did not like the white chocolate dessert. Why would they serve food where 50% of staff did not like it and expect customers to like it. In addition to this the ice cream on the plate was partially melted when served.
4. The wine pairing was very disappointing. The quality of wine was very poor. We would not serve this type of wine at a dinner party let alone on New Years Eve.
We did like one dish. The foie gras brulee was good.
In additional to sending back several dishes we told our server that we were disappointed by the meal. She informed us that others, who had ordered the tasting menu, had also complained about their meal. If one person complained you can be rest assured that others were thinking and feeling this way. We were shocked that there was no attempt to compensate, correct or improve our dining experience based on all these issues. We spent $200 on a meal that was very disappointing and quite frankly ruined our New Years Eve celebration. Our New Years Eve meal at Grain de Riz started our 2012 off ion a bad note.We did contact Florence Albernhe, the Chef-propriétaire, who was unwilling to refund the meal or compensate us to our satisfaction. We will not be going back to Grain de Riz.
We would highly recommend you try one of Quebec’s other wonder restaurants such as: Panache, Bistro B, Azalée Sushi, Ristorante il Matto or Café du clocher penché.
