For a break from fine dining, head to Chez Ashton, a Québec City fast-food institution with dozens of restaurants across town. Some Québec City boosters swear it’s the best poutine in the province (Montrealers, of course, would quickly dismiss such an idea). Though poutine is the draw, Ashton also whips up burgers and roast beef sandwiches.

    You can't say you've been to Quebec city unless you've tried Poutine and, even then it's got to have been in Chez Ashton. If you've not seen poutine before, you're in for a shock - think chips (fries), gravy-like sauce but tastier and "squeaky cheese" - cheese curds I'm assured, the squeakier the better.

    Chez Ashton is a franchise chain across the city; There's an excellent one just off Rue St Jean in Vieux Quebec, next to the O'Neill store. Whether you're after a quick snack to tide you over, want to go 'grand' and make it your main meal, or are jonesing something after a night out - Chez Ashton on Grande Allee Est is THE one for that - poutine a l'Ashton is the definitive Quebec experience.
