Algonquin Provincial Park hotels and hostels

Algonquin is primarily a nature preserve, which means that most noncamping accommodations are outside the park's boundaries. Scores of accommodations are available just beyond the protected lands, including resorts, motels and hostels (check www.algonquinpark.on.ca for a lengthy list). Day-trippers can save some cash and crash in Huntsville or Bracebridge, 43km and 73km from the West Gate, respectively. Both Muskoka towns have a variety of restaurants and grocery stores.

Within the park itself, there are three options: stay at one of the 11 car-accessible grounds (either in a tent or a yurt), sleep in the backcountry (accessible only by hiking or canoeing) or rest in the lap of luxury at one of the three high-end resorts. The three upmarket options have restaurants, as does the visitor center (although it's more cafeteria-style).

There are three fabulous hostels in the area, but the cheapest sleeping option at Algonquin is to camp within the park. You must contact the centralized reservation service for Ontario Parks to make camping, backcountry camping and yurt reservations. There are a couple of first-come first-served sites, but reservations are strongly recommended. There are eight campgrounds with car camping (sites $32.75 to $42.75) and yurts ($85) along Hwy 60, and three additional sites (Achray, Brent and Kiosk) accessible via minor roads further north. Backcountry camping costs $11.50 per person per night.
