Introducing Pond Inlet

On Baffin Island’s north coast, Pond Inlet (population 1315) is in Tununiq, ‘the place facing away from the sun.’ Perhaps for that reason, locals seem more insular and unfriendly than in other Nunavut towns. Non-Inuit originally arrived here for whaling and trading opportunities; now they come to kayak, hunt and gaze slack-jawed at the mountainscape. Make arrangements with outfitters before arriving; this is not a place to wing it.
