Lonely Planet review for McNabs Island Ferry

Fine sand and cobbled stone shorelines, salt marshes, abandoned military fortifications and forests of maple, beech and red spruce paint the scenery of the 400-hectare McNabs Island in Halifax Harbour. In all there are 30km of roads and trails to explore close to the city yet far away from its clatter and clamor. Staff of the McNabs Island Ferry will provide you with a map and an orientation to the island.

For camping reservations, contact the Department of Natural Resources; due to increased fire risks from rotting trees ploughed down by Hurricane Juan campfires are currently prohibited on the island. The ferry runs from Fisherman's Cove in Eastern Passage, a short drive through Dartmouth. When the ferry staff are not too busy, they'll pick you up in Halifax for the same fare. The ferry's captain Mike Tilly (AKA Redbeard) will also lead nature tours and charters from around C$49 per hour for groups. Another option to get to McNabs is the harbor taxi based at Cable Wharf.

McNab's Island is a fun adventure. Call Mike to get there!

    vipa recommends this,

McNab's Island is worth a visit. Getting there can be a challenge if you don't have a car. We were told to ferry from Halifax to Dartmouth and take a bus or taxi to Fishermen's cove. Fortunately we called Mike's "ferry" service and he offered to pick us up at the Halifax harbor. He will do this if weather conditions allow. His "ferry" is boat with a motor that can carry up to maybe 5 or 6 people, so don't expect a large ferry boat with indoor/outdoor seating! Mike got us to McNab's, gave us a map and orientation and picked us up 3 hours later. He charged $15 per person. It was a fun boat ride. The island is great for spotting wild life and also has the remains of some old military forts.
