Introducing Amherst
Amherst is the geographic center of the Maritimes and a travel junction for travelers to Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick. There’s little reason to dawdle as you’re just a short drive from either the Bay of Fundy shore or the Northumberland Strait (between Nova Scotia and PEI), but the historic downtown does have some stately buildings and there’s bird-watching nearby. The massive VIC (902-667-8429; 8:30am-9pm Jul & Aug, to 8pm Jun & Sep, to 6pm May & Oct, to 5pm Nov-Apr) is at exit 1 off Hwy 104, just as you cross the border from New Brunswick.
