Moncton

Sights in Moncton

  1. A

    Tidal Bore Park

The tourist literature talks up the twice-daily return of the waters of the tidal Petitcodiac River. In theory, the tide comes in as one solid wave, unfurled like a carpet across the muddy riverbed in one dramatic gesture. As the tide advances up the narrowing bay it starts to build up on itself, pushed from behind by the powerful tides in the Bay of Fundy, the world's highest. The height of this oncoming rush can allegedly vary from just a few centimeters to about 1m. In reality, it usually just looks like a big mud seep, and is, well…boring.

    Dieppe Farmers' Market

A great place to get a taste of New Brunswick's vibrant Acadian culture is this weekly market. Stalls overflow with locally made cheeses, cottage wines and homemade preserves as well as Acadian dishes such as tourtière (a meat pie), fricot à la poule (home-style chicken stew) and rabbit pie. Nibble sweet pastries such as plogues and guaffres while browsing the craft stalls. To get there from downtown, head 2km east on Main St, which becomes Champlain, to Acadie Ave. Look for the yellow roof.

  3. Casino New Brunswick

The province's first full-service casino, this 24,000-sq-foot gambling palace brings a touch of Vegas to Moncton. Since opening in 2010, it's been packing in crowds with its 500 slot machines, poker room, numerous bars and buffets, and an entertainment venue boasting big-name performers such as the Beach Boys and Bill Cosby. The casino is about 9km northwest of the town center off Mountain Rd.

  4. Magnetic Hill

At Magnetic Hill, incredibly one of Canada's best-known (though not best-loved) attractions, gravity appears to work in reverse. Start at the bottom of the hill in a car and you'll drift upward. You figure it out. After hours and out of season, it's free. It's a goofy novelty, worth the head-scratching laugh, but all the money-generating, spin-off hoopla now surrounding the hill is nothing special. Family-oriented attractions include a zoo, faux village hawking ice cream and souvenirs, and a water park. Magnetic Hill is about 10km northwest of downtown off Mountain Rd.
