Bagel Place
You can watch them haul the crunchy, chewy bagels right out of the oven through the giant window on rue Ste-Catherine. There's a variety of toppings including smoked salmon, chicken salad, ham 'n' cheese and more, and the cheese bagels are outstanding.

Fairmount Bagel
One of Montréal's famed bagel places, people flood in here around the clock to scoop them up hot the minute the come out of the oven. Bagels are the one thing Montrealers don't get creative. They stick to the classic sesame or poppy seed variety, though you can pick up anything from chocolate chip to sundried tomato bagels here too.

Marché Jean-Talon
The city's largest market, right in the heart of Little Italy. There are several hundred market stalls on a huge square ringed by shops that stock all matter of produce year-round including fruits, vegetables, potted plants, herbs and (of course) maple syrup.

Marché Maisonneuve
About 20 farm stalls, and inside, a dozen vendors of meat, cheese, fresh vegetables, tasty pastries and pastas in a beautiful beaux arts building (1912-14) in Maisonneueve, girded by pretty gardens.

This local institution has a mind-boggling selection of fresh pasta, antipasto and olive oil. The fun here is seeing the old timers do the rounds. Stop, watch, listen, buy what they buy. You'll be on your way to an authentic Italian meal before you know it.

Provigo
They're huge, well stocked and often have elaborate deli counters serving fried chicken and smoked-meat sandwiches. There's another outlet in the Plateau (50 ave du Mont-Royal Ouest).
