Lonely Planet review for La Gargote
An Old Montréal standard, this bistro pumps along with quality bistro fare served in a cozy dining room with stone walls and beamed ceilings. There’s nothing particularly inventive about the menu, but the fresh salads, grilled meats and crème brûlée are hard to fault. Good people-watching from the outdoor tables in summer.

La Gargote is a place to avoid
travelguyny does not recommend this,
I have just returned home from a trip to Montreal. La Gargote is mentioned on this site as well as others as a good restaurant but it is impossible to imagine that anyone would recommend it. When my family and I first entered the restaurant we were greeted by a very friendly waitress but in Montreal almost everyone you meet is very friendly. We made our choices and waited while the restaurant got busier and quality of service became minimal. After a very long time we were served our starters which were not bad but not great. Eventually the main courses came and each dish was a huge dissappointment. My veal was so over cooked it was like shoe leather and my wife's scallops while not awful weren't great either and the portion was insulting. She had bay scallops and it looked like they had cooked two scallops and sliced them into six quarter inch thick pieces. You can get a better meal at Burger King than La Gargote.
