Lonely Planet review for Au Pied de Cochon

One of Montréal’s most respected restaurants (it’s so well known that there’s no sign) features extravagant pork, duck and steak dishes, along with its signature foie gras plates. Award-winning chef Martin Picard takes simple ingredients and transforms them into works of art. The famous and surprisingly magnificent canard en conserve (‘duck in a can’), for instance, is half a roasted duck magret served with foie gras, cabbage, bacon, venison and spices, sealed and cooked in a can – then opened tableside and dumped over celery root puree on toast. Dishes are rich and portions are large, so bring an appetite. Reservations essential.

    Somewhat overrated

    lapetitelea does not recommend this,

My expectations were too high... Its too hyped up. I still think the chef is interesting and is doing alot for Quebec food culture around the world, but he seems to have neglected his restaurant. Too greasy, meats that weren't well cooked, service was really bad...

    Good for: Foodies, carnivores

    Not good for: vegetarians

Definitely make reservations for this very busy, very crowded unique little restaurant in a quaint part of town. A group of three of us went and we were crammed at this little table that barely held all of our delicacies - including glasses of beer. But we did not mind as we devoured our pigs feet and poutine foie gras, a must have while we watched the cook using the wood fired ovens. Another must have is a big wallet as the food does not come cheap here, but if you want to splurge Au Pied du Cochon is indeed a culinary experience! The bathroom - the only one - is also very interesting.
