    Le Pharaon Lounge

The Tintin theme of its neighboring restaurant spills over into this small, laid-back, casual lounge. Like the nearby office workers who frequent it, you won’t come here for gimmicks, pickups or trendiness, but rather for a place to hang out with friends when all you really want is a drink while you chat or unwind at the end of the day. It often hosts jazz acts.

    Whiskey Café

Cuban cigars and fine whiskies are partners in crime at this classy joint, hidden near the industrial sector of the Mile End. The well-ventilated cigar lounge is separated from the main bar, which stocks 150 Scotch whiskies, plus wines, ports and tasting trios. Snacks range from foie gras to Belgian chocolates. Music is as sexy-smooth as the leather chairs.

  3. Typhoon Lounge

Young yuppies, anglo- and francophone, slip in to this Côte-des-Neiges watering hole for a beer and chicken legs on the way home, or camp out for jazz, blues and world beats. It’s hard to shake the office-worker ambience but on summer nights it’s a good pit stop while cruising Ave Monkland.

    Wunderbar

While hotel bars can be iffy, this modern room is among the city’s safest bets for a soiree on the town. Wunderbar was developed by New York–based nightlife impresarios, who blended local and international culture with the ease of a dry martini. Weekly DJ nights attract a dancey, trendy crowd.

    Café des Éclusiers

This Old Port summertime staple is open from May to September only. Always crowded, it has a restaurant, bar, lounge, sprawling outdoor terrace and beach club of sorts. Although the scene can be a bit much, the after-work crowd adores the lounge, house music DJs and elaborate cocktails.
