A Churchill oddity is the fact that approximately 1000 residents use around 3000 vehicles; for visitors, walking is an easy and enjoyable method of transport in summer, invigorating during winter.

Manitoba Resources recommends taking a Big Bear Taxi (204-675-2345) if leaving town (even to Cape Merry), though most locals walk or cycle. Polar Inn (204-675-8878; 15 Franklin St; per day $15) rents bicycles and Tamarack Rentals (204-675-2192; www.tamarackrentals.ca; 117 Button St; truck per day $65-95) rents pick-up trucks (gas is expensive, about 10¢ more than down south). If you’re good at making friends, it’s possible to bum a ride, but remember you’re not the only visitor in town.
