Lonely Planet review for Blethering Place

The name means 'voluble, senseless talking' but don't act like a blethering idiot at this traditional tearoom.

High Tea for the non discriminating,,,

    canayjun does not recommend this,

Victoria has a reputation for ‘traditional’ English tea rooms, and the Blethering Place is on the must see list for many tour busses and groups. It is located in Oak Bay, a posh municipality attached to Victoria, home of upscale shops, galleries and restaurants that are housed in three blocks of faux Tudor buildings. The Blethering Place could be described as the most over Brit-ified of all the shops, more a restaurant that serves 'High Tea', than a cosy Tea Room. The dark, dated décor is a tacky middle England fifties version of tearoom crossed with a pub. The foyer is stocked with British sweets, chocolates and memorabilia.

The menu offers traditional North American favorites side by side with ‘classic’ stodgy English fare such as Fish and Chips, Bangers and Mash, Steak and Kidney Pie. The afternoon tea plate has a ‘commercial’ feel to it, and lacks the delicacy of tea goodies found in other, smaller Victoria tea-rooms. The scones were mediocre, the butter tarts (a typically Canadian treat) were strangely infused with coconut instead of currants The servers, mostly older women in twee long dresses and aprons provide friendly service however the food is nothing special, and having enjoyed tea in several other Victoria tea rooms, this was definitely an overpriced disappointment
