Nanaimo

Park sights in Nanaimo

  1. Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park

Nanaimo's rustic outdoor gem offers tranquil hiking and cycling, as well as beaches and wildlife-spotting opportunities. Settled by the Coast Salish – and still part of their traditional territory – it was the site of shipyards and coal mines before becoming a popular short-hop summer excursion in the 1930s, when a teahouse was added. Accessed by a 10-minute ferry from the harbor (adult/child $4/3), there's a seasonal eatery and regular First Nations dancing displays.
