Osteria de Medici
Italian restaurants are ubiquitous in North America, but few are as good as their home-country counterparts. Fortunately, the grandiose Medici is one of an authentic minority with uncomplicated renditions of classic Italian dishes such as veal marsala and linguine alla vongole (mussels). The secret? The proprietor is from Molise (east of Rome) and half of the clientele are from Hollywood (if you believe the blurb).

Giorgio's Trattoria
Slightly fancier than your average salt-of-the-earth trattoria, Giorgio's, nonetheless, serves up authentic Italian classics like osso bucco risotto and a fine pear and gorgonzola pizza mixed with the odd Alberta inflection (Buffalo papardelle!). The interior is elegant and there are prices to go with it (especially the wines).
