St James's Gate Olde Irish Pub

As Celts pretty much opened up western Canada and gave their name to the town of Banff, it's hardly surprising to find an Irish pub in the park and rather a good one at that. Aside from stout on tap and a healthy selection of malts, St James's offers classic pub grub such as burgers and stew.

    Tommy's Neighbourhood Pub

Tommy's pub grub menu stretches to crab cakes and spinach artichoke dip. More importantly for traditionalists there's good draft beer, a darts board, and plenty of opportunity to meet the kind of globe-trotting mavericks who have made Banff their temporary home.

  3. Elephant & Castle

What passes for damn ordinary in London (where the Elephant & Castle is a rather grotesque shopping center) is strangely exotic in Edmonton. A red phone box, velvety bar stools and the smell of beer emanating from the thick, carpeted floor add British authenticity to this sporty drinking nook where you can watch Man United do battle with Chelsea et al.

    Elk & Oarsman

Upstairs with a crow's-nest view of Banff Ave, this is the town's most refined pub. The rooftop patio is prime real estate in the summer and the kitchen will fix you up with some good food if you so desire.

    Thirsty Bear Saloon

Wild nights in the wilderness happen in this large pub/performance space aided by live music, karaoke, good beer and mildly inebriated young ladies in cowboy hats.

    St James Gate

An ersatz upscale English pub replete with lots of dark wood and snugs, this place packs 'em in for the 24 beers on tap, stiff drinks and tasty fish and chips. It gets crowded late as the pals of the staff drop by after the places they work close.

    Rose & Crown

Banff's oldest pub (since 1985!) is a fairly standard British-style boozer with pool tables and a rooftop patio. Out of all the town's drinking houses, it is best known for its live music, which raises the rafters seven nights a week – everything from communal singalongs to Seattle grunge.

    Ship & Anchor

The Ship is an uberclassic Calgary institution, an all-time favorite of uni students, people who think they're hip and indie music fans. With plentiful beers on tap, the shadowy interior is a cozy winter hideaway, while the picnic table-filled patio is Posing Central come summertime.

    Black Dog Freehouse

Insanely popular with all types, the Black Dog is essentially a pub with a couple of hidden extras: a rooftop patio, known as the 'wooftop patio,' with heaters (naturally, this is Alberta), a traditional ground-floor bar (normally packed cheek to jowl on weekday nights), and a basement that features live music and occasional parties. The sum of the three parts has become a rollicking Edmonton institution.

    Hop In Brew

Imagine if you took an old house, turned it into a dive bar, and then threw a great party every weekend. Tucked down a quiet street just off the main drag, the Hop In Brew has got some style. The converted house has a bar upstairs and down, a pool table up top and winding steps right through the middle. There are good tunes, grungy atmosphere and plenty on tap.
