Lonely Planet review for Nellie's Kitchen

Nellie's has long been a favorite place to start the day, catch up with friends and attempt to quell a hangover. Awesome big breakfasts, bottomless coffee and funky style are the hallmarks of this 17th Ave stalwart. Nellie's is a growing empire these days, but the original is still the best.

Nellies is no longer a site to see

    canuckkerri does not recommend this,

A decade a go Nellies was the place to be for fun, funky and delicious breakfasts. We were regulars there. We have finally stopped going. After 4 last chances (yes it did take us that long to give up the rose tinted glasses) where we had omlettes raw in the middle, cold limp bacon, dirty glassware hashed browns still hard in the middle and revolting bathroom cleanliness issues we have moved on. Time to remove this restaurant from this list.

    Comfortable Comfort Food

    iamaskier recommends this,

Nellie's is true homestyle cooking, only the chances are your mother doesn't cook this well. The fare is simple and hearty, always consistent, and every time I have been there, the staff have been friendly and laid back.

Breakfast is served all day long, and the meals run from a light fruit platter with yogurt to a full plate of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and any morning-time fare you could desire. The waffles and french toast are particularly delicious, or for someone with less of a sweet tooth, Nellie's offers a wide selection of omelets to fit any craving. On their lunch menu, hearty, simple dished like soups, chili, and sandwiches fill out the menu. Nothing about the food is fancy, nothing is original or even very interesting, but you will be safe to order anything since it's all tasty and satisfying.

Apart from the simple food, Nellie's Kitchen draws in the crowds with their old style diner atmosphere that's packed into every corner of the small eatery. Literally. Every single inch of the walls is covered with vintage posters, old plates, and all sorts of amusing little trinkets that could be found before the 1970's. The restaurant may be small but the crowded, pleasant vibe attracts people who have come to enjoy it. Nellie's is not a place to run for a hurried lunch in between meetings. Bring the newspaper or a good book, or even a friend with whom you have a lot of catching up to do, and enjoy one of the most cheerful and enjoyable eateries in the city.

    A Great Breakfast Place

    bryguy76 recommends this,

This place is typically very busy on weekend mornings with the slightly hippie and alternative crowd. The breakfast is fantastic and the service is pretty great. It's not a place for someone who doesn't have patience for people who wear hemp products. The crowd is enjoyable and the food is good, and not too pricey. It isn't open in the afternoons and evenings except on the weekends. All things considered, if you don't mind standing in a line for 20 minutes or so on Sunday morning to get breakfast, this is the place to go, be seen and start your day out.
