There is a lively running commentary that broadcasts through your stereo, pointing out highlights as you travel. All you have to do is follow the directions and you get a great self-guided tour of the area – Banff, Lake Louise, Columbia Icefield, Jasper and Calgary are all included on the tour. Best of all, if you get tired of the tour guide you can always turn it off.

    Formerly known as plain old Ijiraliq Territorial Park, this tongue-twister of a park (the name means: 'the land around the river of little fish') is located 10km from town and is popular for hiking and berry picking. Near the Meliadine River's mouth are archeological sites where the Dorset people, who preceded the Inuit, used to live.

    Like most towns in the Georgian Bay region, Orillia offers a variety of sightseeing cruises. The Island Princess departs daily at 2:15pm, with up to four cruises throughout the day in July and August. Lunch and dinner cruises ($40 and $50, respectively) require advance booking. If you have the time, hop up to Penetanguishene or Parry Sound for slightly more spectacular cruising options.
