Siem Reap and the Temples of Angkor Plan
Blog: barnz2k : Vegan Nomad - 6 July 2009
Basically the only reason people come to Siem Reap (and for some Cambodia in general) is to visit Angkor Wat – the World’s Largest Single Religious Monument – and the surrounding temples, over 1,000 of them! And wat a sight they are The temples of Angkor are almost an antithesis to the sights [...]

Much Ado about Malaria
Blog: barnz2k : Vegan Nomad - 6 July 2009
I hate tablets. Pills. Vaccines. Drugs. They are expensive, have bad side effects, are full of crap I really don’t want in my body (both chemical and animal derived), almost certainly tested on animals, treat symptoms rather than the cause, and in many cases are simply ineffective! On my first big RTW trip, I had [...]

Inspiration Through the Eyes of Two Travelers
Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 1 July 2009
Dave and I often discuss this idea. Who "up there" decides who will be born in luxury and who will be born in poverty. When we were in Cambodia, we had a hard time accepting ourselves and felt guilty for being who we are. The world is not a fair place and travel opens our eyes to it on a very real and deep level.

Phnom Penh
Blog: barnz2k : Vegan Nomad - 1 July 2009
After the mission it was to get here and how late it was, all I managed the first night was food (Cambodian Veg Fried Rice!) and bed! The next day I walked around the city and was waiting for Ian to arrive. I was looking for a specific veg restaurant but couldn’t find the damn [...]

Saigon to Phnom Penh, via the Mekong Delta
Blog: barnz2k : Vegan Nomad - 29 June 2009
My next move was to head to Cambodia, and I thought it would be nice to take in some of the Mekong Delta on the way. It could have been great, buit it turned oout to be one of the worst run tours I have ever been on. Basically, various tour companies had booked people for [...]

Angkor with children
Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 26 June 2009
Exploring the temples of Angkor with young children can be challenging. But it’s also rewarding to see these wonders through your child’s eyes, as Angela Savage reveals. I first visited Siem Reap and the surrounding temples in 1992. Back then, the United Nations was running Cambodia, civil war was still raging in the countryside, and there [...]

Day 1 - Is that a Rat In Your Pants?
Blog: Hello, Pineapple? - 18 June 2009
Having finished watching the sunset behind the Royal Palace, and participating in some evening calisthenics with the locals in the main square overlooking the Tonle Sap River, we were ready to dine out in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. Even on a budget, we never went hungry, as I'm sure you know, food comes quite cheap all over South East Asia. The best eats for us all over the region came at the neighborhood street stalls or make-shift dining patios that families would set up in front of their homes.

Upending microcredit: Cambodians use Kiva to lend to U.S. borrowers
Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 12 June 2009
This Wednesday marked a watershed moment for Kiva.org: borrowers from the U.S. made a well-publicized debut on the person-to-person microlending website. It left no doubt that microcredit, seen by many as the province of the poor, had arrived to serve Americans in need. The floodgates are open, and they sluice both ways. Kiva’s launch of lending [...]

The wonders of Angkor Wat
Blog: velvet escape's blog - 29 April 2009
The wonders of Angkor Wat (a page from my Travel Journal) I’ve just spent five fantastic days exploring the stunning temples at Angkor Wat together with my friends Allan and Nigel. We flew to Siem Reap on Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur (about a two hour flight) and we stayed at a beautiful hotel, Bopha Angkor. The hotel is [...]

Siem Reap
Blog: By Way of the World - 17 April 2009
Angkor Wat is an enormous temple complex built by the Khmer civilization between the 8th and 13th centuries. The Khmer Empire at its height claimed virtually all of present-day Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and parts of Thailand. The main temple, located near the town of Siem Reap, a few hours north of present-day capital Phnom Penh, is the largest religious structure in the world. Angkor Wat is a symbol of pride for a people that have endured enormous amounts of hardship and struggle.

Phnom Penh
Blog: By Way of the World - 7 April 2009
We arrived in Phnom Penh at around 7pm, and immediately began the search for a hotel. When both of us are exhausted, hungry, and buckling under the weight of our packs, walking around a city looking for a cheap hotel can be excruciating and sometimes we end up fighting. To avoid this, we usually book ahead or at least agree on a place ahead of time, so we have a clear direction in mind. However, this time we didn't because Dan remembered a cheap guest house on the lake that he stayed at five years ago during his last visit to Cambodia. We headed for Beong Kak Lake.

Kratie
Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 2 January 2009
A few days out from departing Cambodia we managed to pull off one more trip, to a province we’ve wanted to go to ever since arriving – Kratie (pronounced kra-che). A small town on the banks of the Mekong in central Cambodia, Kratie is best known for its proximity to one of the last remaining [...]

Cambodian food – Part 2
Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 23 December 2008
Roo has reflected elsewhere on the delights of Khmer food and how much it has changed in the 10 years since we last visited Cambodia. Like other forms of cultural expression, the local cuisine–not to mention the food supply–was decimated during the Khmer Rouge period. Eating Cambodian food has an added pleasure in this respect: [...]

This week I met Martel, one of my favourite people in Phnom Penh, at Malis, one of my favourite breakfast venues (right), providing me with the perfect segue to blog about Cambodian food. Martel and I spent a Saturday in November at the popular Cambodian Cooking Class organised through Frizz Restaurant. The classes are run [...]

Bon Om Touk – Water Festival
Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 13 December 2008
Bon Om Touk or the Water Festival is probably the biggest street party I’ll ever attend. Our Filipino neighbours likened it to the People Power movement of 1986. A French friend said the area around Phnom Penh’s Independence Monument looked like the Champs-Elysée after the French won the World Cup. For us, it was a [...]

Three weeks in Phenom Penh, Cambodia
Blog: Todd's Wanderings - 16 October 2008
In September I spent 3 weeks in Phenom Penh, Cambodia on an extended work trip. Flying into the country I was amazed at the transformation that has happened over just the last 3 years since I had visited last, and especially since my first trip in 2001. When I was last in Phenom, Penh in 2005 the buildings were still below 3 stories and a lot of roads were still dirt. I visited most of the typical tourist spots in 2005, here are a few pictures from that trip. Just 40 minutes outside of the city and you feel a world away. The Killing Fields museum.

Kompong Chhnang

We mark the start on Saturday of a four-day holiday for Pchum Ben—Festival of the Ancestors—with a day trip to Kompong Chhnang town, capital of a province with the same name, 91 km northwest of Phnom Penh. I’m tempted to say it’s a bad idea setting out on a road trip on the first day of [...]
