Bansko Mountain Bike Rally 2011: The Road To Nowhere

Mountain Biking in the Pirin is Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July, with registration open on Friday 29th July. For the first mountain bike event I spoke to James Hughes who gave his views on the event, summer tourism and Bansko generally. This year the mtb rally follows the format of last year.

Whilst the Pirin mountain range above Bansko has a lifetime of exploration, I always enjoy a change. Last weekend I was paragliding high up in the Stara Planina mountain range from Sopot. But when its very hot, or there’s some wind for windsurfing on its way, it’s time for the seaside.

Since last reviewing my top Bulgarian wines, there has been more and more competition in the world of Bulgarian wine. Some prices have come down, including my favourite, the top Enira 2007. Now 16 lev at Metro. But it’s hot and sunny here, and I’ve become attached to some more than acceptable rose´ wines.

It was hot weather last week. So it was time for a short paragliding trip to Sopot. Sopot for me is known for its paragliding. It is located 136km east of Sofia and 63km north of Plovdiv. Not so long ago it was best known for making weapons.

Elevation 2011: A Different Perspective

The Elevation Festival has had its fair amount of controversy reported in the Sofia Echo. Ticket sales were lower than expected, Jamiroquai cancelled his performance and very high winds cancelled Sunday’s performances. The event highlighted that, when it comes to weather, you always need a plan B.

His snow report mentions more snow falling in in the Bansko area tonight, and this will see very good ski conditions persist through until at least next weekend. Temperatures will be lower. All pistes are open except blue #10.
