I first got interested in teaching English overseas when I got sick of my 9-5 job in Australia, and wanted something more from life. I didn’t want to waste away…

Earthquake in Sofia. Shaken in the night
Blog: BanskoBlog - 22 May 2012
I woke up, then I screamed. Dazed, I wondered what was happening. The bed, the wardrobe doors, and the half opened door, are shaking and rattling loudly. The ceiling was moving in a blur above me. The lamp swinging vigorously. And this deep roar… … “It’s an earthquake (wikipedia link)” said my girlfriend.

Maybe I should go back to places more often. After nearly decades on the road, i have recently found myself revisiting places i had already seen, more out of lack of options than anything else.

Staying in Sofia; in style
Blog: BanskoBlog - 27 April 2012
Alexander Nevski Cathedral is the number one historical building in Sofia. It is even more impressive inside. But any visitor to Sofia should ensure they spend some time exploring this historical centre of Sofia. I like it here. It is not flooded with tourists — like some cities.

Kohinoor: More than an Indian restaurant in Sofia
Blog: BanskoBlog - 21 March 2012
Staying a few nights in Sofia means many things to different people. Alexander Nevski Church, Vitosha mountain, NDK (for concerts), Opera house Sofia restaurants and many late night clubs. But there’s one place that has become my regular Sofia restaurant… it’s the 100% no smoking Kohinoor indian restaurant in the centre of Sofia.

Sofia, Bulgaria: Empty & Lost
Blog: Inside the Travel Lab - 11 December 2011
Blinking with sleep into the buttercup-yellow light, I stood on the platform and looked around. An abandoned train stood opposite, incoherent graffiti scrawled along its length. The escalators had seen better days (I hoped) as they slumped...Sofia, Bulgaria: Empty & Lost first appeared on Inside the Travel Lab. Head over there for more juicy fresh travel goodness. Lady in the Balkans
Blog: A Lady in London - 3 October 2011
Most people thought I was crazy to travel to the Balkans by myself. I was lectured on safety, on health, on everything imaginable. But I had been curious about the region for years, not least because the only thing I really knew about it related to the conflicts in the 1990’s. There was surely more [...]

Lady in Sofia
Blog: A Lady in London - 29 September 2011
Fans of Saint Sofia had some good urban planning ideas when they built the city they named after her. Bursting with churches, cathedrals, parks, palaces, and pedestrian streets, Sofia, Bulgaria is alive with cultural treasures. Even decades of communism and the drab buildings that went up with them couldn’t dampen the spirit of the saint’s [...]

Blog: BanskoBlog - 6 September 2011
With friends, après ski, après Pirin hiking or just after a long day in the office; yes, it’s beer I’m talking about. Beer the key ingredient for a successful Bansko drunch! And here in Bulgaria, the beer is quite good — and I’m investigating here if it can get better. Read on to see if beer [...] Related posts:Bansko Video Snow Report. UNESCO World Heritage Site #141: Boyana Church
Blog: Everything Everywhere - 1 August 2011
From the World Heritage inscription: Located on the outskirts of Sofia, Boyana Church consists of three buildings. The eastern church was built in the 10th century, then enlarged at the beginning of the 13th century by Sebastocrator Kaloyan, who ordered a second two storey building to be erected next to it. The frescoes in this [...]

How To Reach The Black Sea From Sofia
Blog: BanskoBlog - 20 July 2011
Whilst the Pirin mountain range above Bansko has a lifetime of exploration, I always enjoy a change. Last weekend I was paragliding high up in the Stara Planina mountain range from Sopot. But when its very hot, or there’s some wind for windsurfing on its way, it’s time for the seaside.

Happy Valentines Day from Vagobond!
Blog: Vagobond.com - 15 February 2011
I took a night bus to Sofia, a night train to Istanbul, and a night flight to Casablanca followed by a day train to Fes, a grand taxi to Sefrou, and a petit taxi to the Souidi house and I got to deliver the flowers myself. From the smile on her face (and of course her words and kisses), I think my Valentines surprise did the trick. The only problem is ...how the hell am I ever going to top that next year?

Vagobond in Bulgaria – Part 3 – Sofia Statues and Parks
Blog: Vagobond.com - 13 February 2011
Travel around the world can't be considered complete without visiting at least one former or current communist nation. I've been to a few of them now though many would argue that China is about as communist as the USA. As an anarchist, it strikes me as sad to think of the hope that went into the monuments and art of communism and the tragedy of death and despair that usually emerged from it.

Vagobond in Bulgaria – Part 2 – Sofia Places of Worship
Blog: Vagobond.com - 12 February 2011
Travel around the world and try to write about it as you go and you are sure to miss something. One of the hardest parts of travel for me is finding the time to just stop, chill out, and write about my adventures. I wonder if travel insurance covers that?

Vagobond in Bulgaria – Part 1 – Sofia Tourist Sites
Blog: Vagobond.com - 10 February 2011
During the time I traveled in Sofia, I managed to see and do a huge number of things. I can't fit it all in one, two, or even three posts. To sum up, let me just say that Sofia was a great place for me to visit. On the one hand that's cool, but on the other, when the first act of a play is awesome, it makes the rest a bit harder to appreciate.
