National Art Gallery
Occupying the east wing of the royal palace, the National Art Gallery holds one of the country’s most comprehensive collections of Bulgarian art, with several galleries full of mainly 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures. All the big names are represented, including the ubiquitous Vladimir Dimitrov, whose orange, Madonna-like Harvester hangs in the former royal music room. Other standouts include Goshka Datsov’s The Dream of Mary Magdalene and Georgi Mashev’s creepy Outcast. National Gallery for Foreign Art
An eclectic assemblage of international artworks is on display in this huge gallery, and although you won’t find any world-class treasures here, there are a few big names and plenty of little-known artists to discover. On the ground floor you can browse Indian woodcarvings, Burmese Buddhas, African tribal art and colourful Japanese prints. Upstairs are several galleries of European paintings, mostly by long-forgotten artists, while highpoints include a Van Dyck portrait, minor sketches by Renoir, Matisse and Degas, and a Last Supper attributed to Palma Vecchio.
