Plovdiv for New Year's

Three of us are planning new year's in Plovdiv (we live in Istanbul) and would appreciate any recommendations. Specifically -
1. Is Plovdiv one of those places where New Year's Eve is booked out and overpriced and there are fights in the bars at night? What area of town would you recommend for nightlife that's fun but not crazy?
2. Recommended hostel/hotel to choose or avoid - we want to meet some other friendly people.

Renting in Sofia and snowboarding at Vitosha

Hi!

My girlfriend and I are thinking about moving to Sofia for a month or 6 weeks in sometime in January. We are hoping to rent a one bedroom place in Sofia (good quality internet is vital!) in a nice part of the city with restaurants, cafes, gym, etc close by. We have looked on Airbnb but have not had much luck- it seems quite expensive for what you are getting. Does anyone know of any local websites we might check for better deals? Would it be better to source something locally when we…

Budapest: live music

I'm in Budapest from 11 jan till 15 jan 2015 and would like to visit one evening a live music event.
My online searching found many interesting events until end of 2014 and starting again after 20 jan.,
so it looks really bad luck.
Any kind of musical event will do, as long as I'm able to sit comfortably.

Travelling in winter

Hello everyone,

I will be finishing up my time in Peace Corps Azerbaijan on December 19th. I'm planning on having a trip through Central/Eastern Europe after that. I'm considering Bulgaria. I'm a history/culture kind of traveler, so I'm not planning on skiing. I will hike to reach interesting historical places, but I don't hike for its own sake.

I am interested in going sightseeing in Sofia, and traveling to the Rila Monastery, Plovdiv, Bachkovo, Veliko Tarnovo and Kazanlak. Is it feasible to…

Disabled accessibility to the wonderful bridges

Hi all,

I've just been researching about the wonderful bridges (chudnite Mostove) in Bulgaria. We are interested in visiting but I'm in a wheel chair. Despite my research I can't really find a definitive answer about accessibility. Can anyone out there give me an idea of the terrain. Are there many steps? Is it rough, rocky or steep?
Can it be seen from a distance if it is unaccessable?

Thanks!

Second hand scooter purchase - Bulgaria or Croatia

Hi all,
My partner & I would like to purchase a second hand scooter in eastern europe somewhere (preferably Croatia or Bulgaria/Romania) next summer and travel around this way for a couple of months.
I've found a 'craigslist' type site for Croatia for buying scooters, does anyone know of a similar site in Bulgaria or Romania?

Also can anyone help with the registration details for any of these countries? My partner is an EU citizen if this helps.
Thanks

Bulgarian Interior- a hidden jewel- The Buzludza (Blowfelds Lair!)

I thought anyone travelling to Bulgaria and having the time to visit the interior might be interested in visiting the Buzludza- an ideological building now left abandoned...Its like Blowfelds lair from James Bond...a definite must see!

I shot a video of the building as we travelled from Varna towards Sofia to get a new passport...but that's a different story!

Hope it inspires people to have a look. link to youtube..

Bulgarian Bus Etiquette - Is it okay to change seats?

So far we've only taken one bus from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo and I have a few questions.

Is it okay to change seats after our tickets have been checked? On our last bus, only the front half was full and everyone just sat quietly for the entire three hours. The whole back was empty and I would have loved to go back there and have my own row. 1. Is it okay to get up if the bus is moving and 2. Is it okay to take the empty seats at the back?

We'll be taking three more buses and I don't want to…
