[ourpick] Mehana Chiflika The enormous Chiflika is an excellent mehana with traditional furnishings, live music and a wide range of grilled meats. It’s a place for hearty eaters, and the rustic charm is only enhanced by the sight of some dishes being served up on what are essentially chipped-off tree stumps.

    When you enter the restaurant the first thing you notice is the feeling of going back in time. Ruse has many fine restaurants but nothing like this. Philipo furnary is the owner, having several eateries within the city, but this is his flagship. All the food is sourced locally and indeed much of it from his own farms, making the food the freshest you can buy.

    Sasho the head waiter, has become a friend of ours after visiting here for several years, but as I watch him he treats first time visitors with the same friendliness and enthusiasm he does us.

    The menu is extensive, consisting of all types of Bulgarian cuisine, and as someone previously mentioned these are hearty meals, Lots of meat, vegetables, potatoes and the like. The starters are just as large and although desserts are limited to a few stock items there is something for most tastes.

    My favourite meal is called a satch, this is served on a large metal platter and comes in sizes from 2 people to 4. The dish is presented to you and the lights in the restaurant are turned down, then Vodka is poured upon it and the food is set alight, causing everyone to look and smile.

    An excellent place, mostly traditional but recent renovations will need time to age as copies of existing woodwork do look a little new.

    The place is adorned with Bulgarian clothing, hand farm implements and pottery, top this of with the live singing every night and its easy to see why, in my opinion, Chiflka is the premiere place to eat in the beautiful city of Ruse.
