Batak

Things to do in Batak

  1. Church of Sveti Nedelya

The Church of Sveti Nedelya, built in 1813, was the final refuge for 2000 locals who fought the Turks in 1876. Signs of the subsequent massacre, such as bullet holes and a macabre, half-covered tomb with dozens of skulls, are gruesomely evident.

  2. History Museum

On the square, the History Museum contains graphic displays about the 1876 April Uprising, the Batak Massacre and the Russo-Turkish War. The downstairs crypt lists locals who fought the Turks.
