Land
Bus
The São João bus station (3371 5617; Rua Cristóvão Colombo) is about 1.5km northeast of town.
Direct buses go to Rio, via Petrópolis (Paraibuna bus company, R$51, 5½ hours, 8am and 2pm Monday to Friday, with extra buses on weekends); Belo Horizonte, via Congonhas (Sandra, R$32, 3½ hours, seven daily from 6am to 7pm, with extra buses on Sunday); São Paulo (Gardénia and Vale do Ouro, R$59, 7½ hours, seven daily from 9:20am to 11:20pm); Caxambu (Sandra, R$32, 3½ hours, one daily at 3pm), Ouro Prêto and Mariana (Vale do Ouro, R$40, 3½ to four hours, two daily at 5:30pm and 3:30am – for the early morning bus, buy tickets the day before).
Train
The wonderful Maria-Fumaça tourist train runs on weekends between São João del Rei and Tiradentes.
