Brazil Frequently Asked Questions

For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.

I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea.…

Bahia: Morro de Sao Paulo – Itacare – Peninsula de Marau?

Hi!
Morro de Sao Paulo – Itacare – Peninsula de Marau - which one of these places?
Or maybe all three? Is one of these places redundant?
Thanks,
Amir

Southern Pantanal tours

Hi there, I'm looking to do a tour to the Pantanal from Campo Grande in early March (know it's not the best time of year to do it but no choice), and having a hard time figuring out which tour company will give me a decent experience without costing the earth - so many mixed reviews online! Any recommendations/has anyone used Pantanal Discovery? I've read about Santa Clara being good but am wary of the hassle of organising transport to and from the pousada...Would also prefer to stay in a dorm…

Barreirinhas to Jericoacoara

OK, I know lots of people do this (one way or another). And until recently, there was only two ways:
- Expensive ride along the beach for 1500-1800 reais per car.
- Two days riding local buses with an overnight stop. Cost is about 170 reais.

I was contemplating doing the last one (as I'm on a budget). However, speaking to the hostel owner (Casa do Profesor in Barreirinhas - great guy and always welcoming and helpful) he had another way.
- First travel by local bus (read back of a truck) to…

Hostels and Air BnB in Rio and Salvador

I am a female travelling solo to Salvador and Rio for 9 days over Easter. I am looking at booking accommodation now as being the Easter things will get booked up. I have stayed in hostels on previous trips when I have travelled solo and enjoyed meeting new people. . I was thinking about trying Air BnB for this trip but unsure about doing it solo. Has anyone booked Air BnB in one or both of those cities. What was your experience? Would you advice me to book hostels instead. If so where would you…

Bonito and Pantanal in 4 days

Hi!

We will fly from Rio to Campo Grande and have 6 days in this area out of which 4 full days (transport to/from Rio is 2 days). We would like to see both Bonito to do some snorkeling in the rivers/caves, and also see Pantanal wildlife. I know that the time is very short, but this is all we have: 4 full days.
What would be better: stay in Bonito 2 days, and then take bus and stay 1 day and a half in Pantanal, or book a day tour of Pantanal from Bonito? Are Pantanal tours booked in Bonito good?…

Salvador/Rio/Ilha Grande April 2015

Hello

I am looking for some advice on my planned itinerary. I land in Rio at 8.35am on April 1st, I depart on April 9. My plan is to get a flight to Salvador the same day. How much time should I give myself from landing to clear immigration to book the domestic flight to Salvador?

I plan to spend 3 nights in Salvador. Fly back to Rio on April 4 and spend 3 nights in Rio until April 7. Go to Ilha Grande for I night and spend my last night in Rio. Is this a realistic itinerary?

Thanks for any…

Speedboats from Manaus to Iquitos?

Hey there, I've decided that a flight might be out of my budget so looking into speedboats from Manaus-> Tabatinga, Tabatinga-> Iquitos. Has anyone done this recently and know a trustworthy company or have any tips on travelling safely? I've read that these boats do exist, but leave once a week with no evidence of what that day might be.

Any information, especially from women would be amazing!

Salvador de Bahia - rent a car - where?

Hi,

We plan to rent a car in Salvador for about a week, to go to Chapada Diamantina and some places on the way. Is it more reasonable to pre-book the car with well-established international company such as Alamo or find something local?

You think booking in advance is a good idea, or just walk in and rent on the spot?

Also, is it possible to extend pre-booked rental for a day if in need?

thanks,
