    If you are interested in doing some shopping for Alagoas' characteristic filé crochetwork, head for Pontal da Barra , a fishing/crafts village beside the Lagoa Mundaú. Women weave outside the shops that line the streets, and prices are generally the lowest around. To get there, catch any bus heading south with Barra in its name.

    Run by a rural workers' association, this shop sells soap, boxes, jewelry and other products made from the babaçu, a highly versatile Maranhão palm that also provides food, oil, timber, roofing, fertilizer, cattle feed and charcoal for people in rural parts of the state.

    Casa da Cultura

    This place is a creepy colonial-era prison with shops in cells where prisoners languished until 1973 (cell 106 is preserved as it was). Pernambuco’s traditional handicrafts, such as clay figurines, wood sculptures, lace and leather goods, plus plenty of T-shirts, can be found here.
