A restaurant with a half-misleading name
zerotres recommends this,
The name of this restaurant is Socaldinho Guaiamum and it is located in the neighborhood of Pina, just north of Boa Viagem's touristic hustle and bustle. It is great proof that if you go even barely outside of the main tourist district you can find a local atmosphere with more reasonable prices.
Its name is not 100% accurate: "só caldinho" means "only soups", but even their preparation of caldinho is non traditional. These are served in mugs and are larger and heartier than those found elsewhere. They're a great appetizer to a night of cold beers. There are eight types of caldinhos to keep you busy, including one called "viagra", made with bone marrow (mocotó). The local and my personal favorite is the one made in the style of feijoada.
They serve all the traditional northeastern fare -galeto, charque, picanha, fried fish- and weekday lunch is around five dollars. The real treat is the creativity with some of the traditional ingredients. Shrimp get wrapped in cheese, before bring breaded and fried. The "moranga de camarão" sees the shrimp swimming in a pumpkin-coconut puree... inside the pumpkin itself. The onion stuffed with dried meat and cheese ("cebola recheada de charque e catupiry") is amazing, and the crabmeat ("casquinha de caranguejo") is the best I have ever tasted.
The second half of the restaurant's name, however, is not misleading at all. If you like crabs, this is a great place to try guaiamums. They are fattened up with coconut meat, sugarcane and corn meal, making these the crustacean equivalent of kobe meat.
Good variety at the bar with specialty beers and caipirinhas made with local and seasonal fruits. There is no party atmosphere, but it's a good place to have a few cold ones after dinner.
