Porto Seguro Bay
North of town is one long bay dotted with barracas and clubs with invisible divisions creating Praia Curuípe (3km), Praia Itacimirim (4km), Praia Mundaí (6km) and Praia Taperapuã (7km). The sands are white and fluffy, backed by green vegetation and lapped by a tranquil sea. Tôa Tôa (Praia de Taperapuã), Axé Moi (Praia Mundaí) and Barramares (Praia de Taperapuã) are the biggest beach clubs and all have MCs and dancers leading crowds through popular dances.

Cidade Histórica
Motivation is required to climb the stairs to the Cidade Histórica. Rewards include a sweeping view, colorful old buildings, and free and humorous capoeira demonstrations given under the round roof behind the churches (hourly in high season). Warning: the area is beautifully illuminated at night, and definitely worth a look, but the steps are not safe after dark. Take a bus or taxi.

Transilvânia & Alcatraz
Up the coast, Transilvânia & Alcatraz are clubs decorated like their namesakes. Each of these enormous venues has separate areas for axé, forró, samba or MPB and electronic music. If the party is up the coast, there are usually round-trip courtesy buses leaving from the trevo do Cabral (traffic circle at the entrance of town).

Schooner Tours
Local agencies scattered along Av 22 de Abril offer schooner tours to Praia do Espelho as well as trips to Trancoso, Caraíva and the Parque Nacional Monte Pascoal. Trips are also offered to Recife de Fora and Coroa Alta offshore reefs, but we don't recommend it, as visitors are encouraged to walk over coral reefs in order to enter internal pools.

Museu Porto Seguro
Housed in the former Câmara Municipal (Town Council), the Museu Porto Seguro contains exhibits on Brazil’s early settlement, with rooms dedicated to exploration and colonial life; even more interesting are the museum’s exhibits on indigenous life, including films covering important rites and celebrations.

Passarela do Álcool
At night, the Passarela do Álcool has craft stalls and street performers, with live music spilling onto the plazas. Look for fresh-fruit cocktail stands making capeta (guaraná, cocoa powder, cinnamon, sweetened condensed milk and vodka), just the thing to bring a bang to the evening.

Restaurante Portinha
One of the classiest per-kilo eateries around, Portinha puts out a mouthwatering buffet of gourmet dishes, from pasta with sun-dried tomatoes and basil to fresh fish fillets. Both the leafy patio tables and the stylish rustic interior offer plenty of atmosphere.

O Beco
This quaint little open-air galleria, just around the corner from the Passarela do Álcool, is lined with small bistros and cafés where you’ll find everything from sushi to crepes. The elegant Portuguese bakery here, A Torre, is particularly delightful.

Ilha dos Aquário
Across the river, Ilha dos Aquários is traditionally a good party, probably because of the novelty of the aquariums and its river-island setting (reachable by boats from the port on party nights).
