Motivation is required to climb the stairs to the Cidade Histórica. Rewards include a sweeping view, colorful old buildings, and free and humorous capoeira demonstrations given under the round roof behind the churches (hourly in high season). Warning: the area is beautifully illuminated at night, and definitely worth a look, but the steps are not safe after dark. Take a bus or taxi.
