Porto Seguro Sights

  1. Cidade Histórica

Motivation is required to climb the stairs to the Cidade Histórica. Rewards include a sweeping view, colorful old buildings, and free and humorous capoeira demonstrations given under the round roof behind the churches (hourly in high season). Warning: the area is beautifully illuminated at night, and definitely worth a look, but the steps are not safe after dark. Take a bus or taxi.

  3. Museu Porto Seguro

Housed in the former Câmara Municipal (Town Council), the Museu Porto Seguro contains exhibits on Brazil's early settlement, with rooms dedicated to exploration and colonial life; even more interesting are the museum's exhibits on indigenous life, including films covering important rites and celebrations. Opposite the museum is Gonçalo Coelho's marker stone, now encased in glass and ringed with a fence.

  4. Porto Seguro Bay

North of town is one long bay dotted with barracas and clubs with invisible divisions creating Praia Curuípe (3km), Praia Itacimirim (4km), Praia Mundaí (6km) and Praia Taperapuã (7km). The sands are white and fluffy, backed by green vegetation and lapped by a tranquil sea. Tôa Tôa (Praia de Taperapuã), Axé Moi (Praia Mundaí) and Barramares (Praia de Taperapuã) are the biggest beach clubs and all have MCs and dancers leading crowds through popular dances.
