Getting there & away
Cidade do Aço operates two buses daily from Rio to Penedo (R$25, 2½ hours) at 11am and 5pm. Alternatively, take one of their more frequent buses from Rio to Resende, then catch the half-hourly Resende-Penedo bus (R$2.05, 45 minutes). The bus services the 3km-long main street and continues to the end of the paved road.
The bus station (3551 2602) is on a riverfront traffic island. For Maceió, bus options are the expresso litoral (R$17, 2½ hours, two daily) and the pinga litoral (R$17, four hours, two daily). Bestas leaving from the same spot run a more frequent service to Maceió (R$15 to R$20, every 30 minutes). Any of these options provide access to Pontal do Coruripe, Barra de São Miguel and Praia do Francês. For more on the pinga see below.
There is one daily bus to Salvador (R$50, nine hours) via Propriá (R$6, 1½ hours) and Aracaju (R$13, three hours). It could be more convenient to take a ferry to Neópolis (R$1.50, 15 minutes, every 30 minutes from 5:30am to 10pm), where there are more frequent buses.
Topiques (vans) also go to Aracaju, Propriá and most frequently to Piaçabuçu (R$2, 40 minutes, every 30 minutes from 6am to 6pm). Ask the topique drivers hanging out on the riverfront for departure times.
If you’re traveling by car, a car ferry runs between Penedo and Passagem (R$10, 10 minutes, hourly from 5:30am to 10pm), a short drive from Neópolis.
