High ceilings, tall windows, hardwood floors and attractive art make this colonial home a delightful place to stay. There’s a range of rooms at different prices.
This German-owned pousada seems to specialize in polarizing travelers, who either loathe it (being locked in is annoying, some rooms are likened to damp dungeons, staff is indifferent, Peter is quirky) or think it’s great value.
Charming and friendly, the São Pedro occupies a 19th-century house full of art and antiques and has a lovely pool in the leafy garden.
This colorful charmer is great value if you can manage to snag rooms 8, 9 or 10, which are extra spacious with stupendous views, some with outdoor decks and/or four-poster beds. The cheaper interior rooms are distinctly average.
Part of Brazil’s Relais & Châteaux equivalent, Roteiros de Charme, the refined Amparo occupies two 17th-century houses with lovely gardens and views back toward Recife.
