The Tropical must have looked very space-age when it was built in 1971. It’s a large, circular construction surrounded by grassy banks, with rooms looking either onto large central gardens (with a lovely big pool) or out to sea.
The Aurora is for true centavo-pinchers only, and hardened travelers at that, as the handsome square it overlooks (home to several state government buildings and a João Pessoa monument bearing his ‘Nego’ dictum) is unsafe at nig.
The city’s newest hotel, on Praia de Manaíra, is the eco-conscious choice, doing its part for the environment with solar-heated showers, an organic produce garden, reforested wood, and LED lighting throughout.
