Cantina Jeri
Excellent value spot offering a ridiculously extensive (and good) list of pastas and risottos. Dishes are meant for one, but when they show up – placed on the table in the very pan in which they were cooked – they can easily serve two, catapulting this Italian-run midrange into the budget category.

Jeri Moon
This is a good agency which organizes trips. Apart from buggy day trips you can also take buggy or 4WD trips as far west as Parnaíba and the Lençóis Maranhenses – easier though more expensive than public transport.

Tamarindo
Far and away the most creative dining experience in Jeri, under the shadow of a giant tamarind tree. Nearly everything is cooked in the brick oven, which is the norm for the pizza, but not for exquisite gems like Brazil nut–crusted filet mignon or seasoned fish with grilled mango. From the cocktails (frozen tangeroskas with ginger) to the staff and service, it’s a class act above anything in town.

Planeta Jeri
Everything starts – and frequently ends – at Planeta Jeri, near the beach. Things don’t get going until at least 10pm, the caipirinhas (R$5) are divine, and the music runs the gamut from hip-hop to samba. Nocturnal cocktail carts parked on the street here provide an alternative source of inebriation with concoctions such as maracujaroska (passion fruit and vodka).

Peixaria Peixe Brasileiro
Some local fisherman got a bright idea: run a peixaria (fish shop) by day, throw some hot coals and nice tables in the sand alley by night and grill whole fresh fish for tourists. Pick your dinner – pargo (red snapper), robalo (sea bass), shrimp and/or langosta – right out of the fish cooler, where it arrived only hours ago. An experience!

Chocolate
A lovely spot with a charismatic chef-owner (Pat Gâteau), cutely nicknamed after her home-run dessert, one of Brazil’s best petite gâteaux. But you’ll first want to tuck into the excellent risottos here, namely the Amazonian special, with tucupi (a sauce extracted from wild manioc root) and jambú (an Amazonian herb) .

Pimenta Verde
This delightful little corner café with only a few tables pumps out memorable cuisine from the former chef at longtime favorite Carcará. The octopus Provençal (best dish in Jeri?) and the green peppercorn filet are both divine. Cute artistic touches round out the culinary happiness.

Roots Brasil
Roots Brasil, just back from the beach, rents boards (R$20/60 per hour/day) and gives classes (R$50 per hour). It also rents sandboards (R$8 per hour). There are good waves for surfing (best from about March to May) right out in front of Jeri beach.

Pizza Dellacasa
A Paulista (resident of São Paulo city) told us it was the best pizza in town. In reality, it’s a far cry from pizza paulistana, but the frozen drinks in scrumptious flavors such as mango, tangerine and passion fruit are a tropical godsend in this heat.

Café Brasil
In an alley between Rua Principal and Rua São Francisco, smart Café Brasil makes massive, shareable, natural sandwiches with wholegrain breads (R$10), salads, cakes, coffee, juices and smoothies. Consistently some of the best food in town.

Associação dos Bugueiros
Organize buggy rides through the Associação dos Bugueiros. The buggies take up to four passengers and prices are for the vehicle (with driver), so if you join with others it’s cheaper.
