Beware of pickpocketing in the city center and petty theft on the beaches. Tourists waiting at bus stops to return from Praia do Futuro have been targeted. Empty streets in Centro after dark are best avoided. There is prostitution in Meireles and especially Iracema, but the city has had some success in combating sex tourism.
