Santarém Getting there & around

Getting around

The airport is 14km west of the city center; buses (R$1) run to the city every hour or so between 6:15am and 6:15pm. Going to the airport, catch a bus marked ‘Aeroporto’ on Av Rui Barbosa just west of Travessa Barão do Rio Branco, between 5:30am and 5:30pm. Avoid buses marked ‘Aeroporto Velho’; these go elsewhere. Taxis cost an exorbitant R$48 from the airport; or R$35 the other direction.

Arriving by boat, ‘Orla Fluvial’ minibuses (R$1) shuttle between the city center and Docas do Pará, passing the Praça Tiradentes port every 20 to 30 minutes until 7pm. The ‘Circular Esperança’ bus (R$1) runs from the center to the Docas and then the bus station; avoid it returning from the Docas, however, as it does not go directly to the center. A taxi costs R$10 to R$15.

Moto taxis are the best way, beyond walking, to get around town. Most trips cost R$2.
