Ilha de Marajó Getting there & around

Getting around

Buses and minivans meet ferries arriving from Belém and at Camará, Marajó’s main port. Each has a sign to its destination; simply look for the place you’re going and get on. It’s R$3.50 to Joanes, R$3.50 to Salvaterra, and R$8 to Soure, including the barge across the river. Vans cost slightly more than buses, but will drop you right at your hotel door. When you’re leaving, ask your hotel to call for the shuttle to swing by the next day.

Moto taxis are common in all three towns, and cost R$1 to R$2 around town, and R$15 between Joanes and Salvaterra.

In Salvaterra, boats to Soure leave from the town pier (R$2, 15 minutes, 7am to 6:30pm) but you may have to wait a half-hour or more for enough passengers to gather. Alternatively, take a cab or moto taxi to the car ferry port (R$3 to R$8) about 8km from town, where small passenger boats cross day and night, even with just one passenger (R$1, five minutes). If the barge happens to be leaving (hourly 6am to 6pm), you can hop on it for free.

Coming from Soure, the boats that go directly to Salvaterra – the ones you may have to wait a half-hour for – leave from a dock at the end of Travessa 14. The car ferry and motorized canoes leave from a dock at the end of Travessa 15.
