Getting around
Since the lodges are the only places to sleep, drink and eat, and public transportation is very limited, independent travel is difficult here. Driving is not easy. Only a few roads reach into the periphery of the Pantanal; they are frequently closed by rain, and reconstructed yearly. Only the Transpantaneira in Mato Grosso and Estrada Parque in Mato Grosso do Sul go deep into the region. Your options are hitching (never entirely safe), sticking to an operator or arranging transport in advance through a lodge.
