Things to do in Tabatinga

  1. Jungle Trips

Tabatinga and the Colombian town of Leticia lie side-by-side on the eastern bank of the Amazon, about 1100km west of Manaus, while the far bank belongs to Peru. This area, known as the 'triple frontier', is a logical travel hub and also happens to be good for taking jungle trips, particularly to remote areas up the Rio Javarí (the Brazil-Peru border) and further up the Rio Amazonas in Colombia.

Most travelers base themselves in Leticia, which is more pleasant and better equipped than Tabatinga or the small villages on Peruvian side.

  2. Recanto das Tulipas

A Dutch-Brazilian team holds down this fort, a colorful and discerning restaurant decked out to the sounds of MPB and the tulip paintings of the co-owner. Seafood is the specialty but the menu is well-rounded otherwise. Try the Jorge Amado caipirinha, a lime and passion-fruit cocktail made with cinnamon and clove-infused cachaça (sugarcane alcohol) from Paraty.

  3. Churrascaria Tia Helena

Waiters bring skewered meats directly from the grill and carve it at the table in classic churrascaria fashion. Decor is austere (think cement floors and fluorescent lights) but the food is good and the ambience cheerful.

  4. Restaurante Tres Fronteiras do Amazonas

Try the peixe tres fronteiras, a fish fillet with spices from Peru, Brazil and Colombia, served on a large banana leaf. Wash it down with a beer or caipirinha.
