Serra do Lajeado
East of town, Serra do Lajeado has scores of beautiful ecological attractions, especially waterfalls, swimming holes, trails and even ancient cave paintings. Its sheer cliffs make it a popular destination for rappelling and paragliding, as well. Unfortunately, most of the land is privately owned, and at the time of research the best and most accessible attractions were closed to visitors by the landowners. Call the Centro de Atendimento ao Turista (CATUR) for the latest info.

Memorial Coluna Prestes
Housed in a curious white, tubular structure near Palacio Araguaia, the Memorial Coluna Prestes tells the life story of Captain Luis Carlos Prestes, who led 1500 rebel soldiers against the military dictatorship in 1924. The march lasted three years and covered 25,000km, and is credited with helping bring democracy to Brazil, especially its long-isolated interior.

Palacio Araguaia
Built on the only hill in town, the Palacio Araguaia, the state capitol, looks over the plaza and Palmas itself. The lobby is adorned with huge colorful mosaics and in one corner there’s an impressive scale model of Praça Girossóis, which you can then compare to the real thing from windows on the 2nd floor.

Trattoria Toscana
The gnocchi, ravioli and lasagna are all made in-house, and served in hefty portions. The spaghetti and linguini use store-bought noodles, but the sauces – salmon, puttanesca, and others – are excellent. For dessert, splurge on the divine petit gateau di cioccolato (petite chocolate cake; R$10).

Pizzería Paço do Pão
The pizza menu at this popular eatery between Ruas NO-02 and NO-04 runs into the dozens, with a house special that comes loaded with three types of meat, corn, heart of palm, olives and a thick layer of cheese. Outdoor seating makes it a great place for lingering over a pie and a Skol (or two).

Restaurante Seara
Between Av NS-02 & Rua NE-02, this large bustling per-kilo place is popular with workers at nearby government offices. It has two banks of prepared food and friendly service, and better still, it’s open until 3pm, when every other self-service restaurant is dead and gone by 2pm.

Cine Rio
Palmas’s one and only movie theater isn’t much to rave about, with just three screens showing none-too-recent Hollywood flicks. It’s located in a somewhat moribund amusement center, down a no-name street just east of Av Teotônio Segurado between Av LO-03 and Av LO-05.
