Lonely Planet review for Forte Duque de Caxias

More commonly known as Forte do Leme, this military base is open to the public on weekends, when visitors can access the forested trail skirting up to the top of Morro de Leme. The short but steep trail passes through Atlantic rain forest and by the ruins of an earlier 18th-century fort that stood here. The views from the top are magnificent.

Beautiful panoramic view of Copacabana and Guanabara Bay.

    chirachira recommends this,

The view from the top of the hill where the fort is situated is incredible. Just an easy walk (though a bit more strenuous when it's humid and hot) through the protected forest, where you can see a variety of birds and butterflies and cute monkeys. There is also a small museum at the fort displaying the history related to the fort and the protected forest. There aren't very many visitors there, which makes taking photos of the view much easier. You can take a packed lunch to have while enjoying the view. Entry fee at the time of this review is R$4 per person. The fort and forest is under guard by army personnel so you feel safe too (not that Copacabana feels dangerous during the day). This is definitely worth visiting!
