Lonely Planet review

One of Rio's most identifiable landmarks, the magnificent 38m-high Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) looms large atop Corcovado. From here, the statue - all 1145 tons of him - has stunning views over Rio (which explains the contented expression on his face). Corcovado, which means 'hunchback,' rises straight up from the city to a height of 710m, and at night, the brightly lit statue is visible from nearly every part of the city.

When you reach the top, you'll notice the Redeemer's gaze directed at Pão de Açúcar, with his left arm pointing toward the Zona Norte, and Maracanã football stadium crowding the foreground. You can also see the international airport on Ilha do Governador just beyond and the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range in the far distance. Beneath Christ's right arm is the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Hipódromo de Gávea, Jardim Botânico, and over to Ipanema and Leblon.

Corcovado lies within the Parque Nacional da Tijuca. You can get here by car or by taxi, but the best way is to go up in the cog train (departures every 30 minutes). For the best view, sit on the right-hand side going up. You can also drive to the top. Taxi drivers typically charge around around R$10 per person (plus around R$5 per person entrance fee) for return trips with waiting time.

Be sure to choose a clear day to visit.
